Lichfield head to Le Mans
Lichfield Round Table recently organised a trip to the world famous Le Mans 24 Hour race, aided by the expert guidance of ex-Lichfield Tabler and Le Mans native Benoît Dutheil (who is due to become a member of Round Table France). Benoît acted as their local guide for the race weekend, showing the Lichfield guys around the circuit, navigating the campsites and roads with ease and even introduced them to traditional French BBQ!
Traveling down in convoy and after a few initial glitches, the guys set off on Thursday evening and caught the early morning Channel Tunnel from Folkstone to Calais. When they arrived in the town of Le Mans on Friday morning, Benoît took the lads to the 'British Welcome Meeting' where a massive collection of rare classic sports cars arrived thick and fast from all over the continent to be displayed to the public - an experience which won't be forgotten in a hurry.
When the guys arrived at their campsite, the rain had caught them up from Britain and they quickly got their base assembled and sheltered from the typical French storm - though thankfully it was short lived that was the last of the rain the guys saw for the rest of the weekend. Their expert Frenchman then took the team over to the pits, where they got up close and personal with the cars and teams that would be competing in the 24 hour race the following day.
Saturday was a fantastic experience for all of the crew, after finding perfect seats trackside in the French sunshine they got to see vintage classic cars in their own race, followed by Aston Martin supercars before the grid assembled for the big event; the 24 Heurs Du Mans.
Cars raced through the afternoon and into the evening darkness, everywhere you went you could hear the roar of the engines as the world's best endurance drivers battled it out on track. Seeing these beasts of machinery hurtling around the track in the middle of the night was an experience that any Bucket List should have on it!
After such an incredible experience, Lichfield Round Table will definitely be doing this event again, and they are even considered opening it up to the whole national association to bring Tablers en masse to the circuit for what would be one of the best weekends on the entire Table calendar!
