Daredevil Drivers took to the hill at Lota Park in Fishguard on Saturday 5th August in a bid to be crowned Fishguard Soapbox Derby Champion 2017.
The event, which is organised by the members of the Fishguard and District Round Table, saw big crowds gather in the August sunshine as they enjoyed hours of soapbox racing as well as stalls and rides in the park.
This year saw 11 entrants into the competition, including the ‘Leek Lightening’ who was a previous competitor in the Red Bull Soapbox Derby contest.
Each entrant had a warm up run, followed by 3 timed runs and a final run for the crowd to cheer their best design with background music provided by Nick Cleary.
Speed monitoring was provided by PCSO’s from the local police force, with the fastest speed recorded at 25mph!
Throughout the day there was plenty of excitement and gasps from viewers as many competitors took to the air and even saw several become casualties of the course following the ramp jump.
Fishguard Table member Mike Annis spoke about the event: "It went really well; there were a lot more crashes as the competitors were really up for it and really wanted to go for the speed.
"We are already thinking about next year's event. People were coming up to us at the end asking how they can get involved next year and saying they would plan their holidays round it.”
There were several trophies given out in different categories throughout the day, with Round Table’s own cart – The Braaan Pearl won the trophy for the fastest time of the day, completing the hill side course and jump in just 16 minutes 40 seconds.
The Drifting Dragons cart took the trophy for best design, while the Phantom Flyer took the prize for derby disaster. The slow and steady prize was awarded to Pubdrive Motorsport.
Every year, Round Table’s across the country organise hundreds of big community events just like this one to raise money for many great local causes and charities and you could be a part of it all, helping change lives.
